A TRADITIONAL APPROACH

Older buildings need materials that work with them, not against them.

Lime has been used in traditional construction for centuries. When specified and applied appropriately, lime-based plaster and mortar can help older masonry manage moisture while retaining the character and texture that make historic buildings special.

At Enriched Building Services, we're developing our traditional building work through hands-on experience with lime plastering, fine lime finishes and lime pointing. Every building is different, so the existing construction and condition should guide the choice of materials and finish.

WHY LIME?

A finish with a purpose.
And a sense of place.

01

Moisture management

Suitable lime systems can be more vapour-permeable than many modern cement-based finishes, helping traditional walls manage moisture movement.

02

Compatibility

Traditional materials can be better suited to historic solid-wall construction, where the choice of finish needs careful consideration.

03

Natural character

Lime finishes bring depth, softness and subtle variation that sit naturally alongside stone, brick, timber and other traditional materials.

04

Repair and renewal

Where appropriate, lime can be used in repair and refurbishment work to help retain the character and fabric of an older property.

The right specification depends on the building, its exposure, existing materials and moisture conditions. Lime is not automatically the right answer for every wall.

OUR LIME & HERITAGE WORK

Careful preparation.
Considered finishes.

Good lime work starts well before the finish coat. The substrate, existing coatings, background condition and appropriate preparation all matter. We take a considered approach to the work and the materials selected for each project.

  • Lime plastering to suitable traditional backgrounds
  • Fine lime finishes and internal wall finishes
  • Repairs and making good to existing lime work
  • Associated lime pointing and traditional masonry work

COMMON QUESTIONS

Thinking about
lime plastering?

Is lime plaster suitable for every property?

No. Lime is often appropriate for traditional solid-wall buildings, but suitability depends on the construction, condition, exposure and existing materials. The wall should be assessed before choosing a system.

Can lime plaster be applied over modern plaster?

Not without checking the existing background and coatings. Preparation and compatibility are important, and existing gypsum, cement or paint layers may need to be assessed before work begins.

Does lime plaster take longer to dry?

Lime finishes generally need more time and suitable conditions to carbonate and dry than many modern gypsum finishes. Timescales depend on the material, thickness, temperature, ventilation and humidity.
